Why Start in 9th Grade
If you're starting college prep in 9th grade, the biggest advantage is this: everything on your transcript now counts, and you have three and a half years to build a profile that stands out.
Common Questions
We often hear these types of questions from parents of 9th graders:
- Why should we start in 9th grade?
- What will my child be doing?
- How do we pick the right extracurriculars and clubs?
- What if my kid doesn't know their interest?
- How should we think about AP courses and academic planning?
- What would a sports recruitment path look like for my child?
What Our Students Are Doing in 9th Grade
Here is what to expect as a parent when you enroll your child in the 9th grade:
- Talent, Interests & Self-Discovery: Identify natural aptitudes and emerging passions through talent and interest assessments. Clarify 2–3 areas of interest and begin informal and formal independent studies to develop foundational skills that lay the foundation for deeper engagement.
- Skill Building & Academic Habits: Take both a practice SAT and ACT to identify preference, skill gaps, and develop a test-taking strategy. Work on improving your time management, note taking strategy, test taking skills, and overall study habits.
- Community Impact & Project Work: Identify the communities you are a part of and want to invest in. Spot real problems in those communities and develop an action plan to begin solving one. Explore civic engagement opportunities and begin building toward measurable impact.
- Independent Study & Personal Projects: Read books, take courses, and complete formal independent studies in your areas of interest. Start planning and working on personal projects. Pursue awards and competitions not just to win, but to understand the landscape — leveraging competitions to network, find mentors, and discover summer opportunities you wouldn't find elsewhere.
- Course Selection & Summer Planning: Map out your academic track — STEM, Business, Humanities — across all four years of high school. This is big-picture planning, not just next year's courses. On the summer side, begin preparing for moderately to highly selective programs that require significant experience and evidence to have a shot.
- Networking & Mentorship Development: Learn communication and networking skills, conduct informational interviews, begin finding possible mentors, and find your first three advisors to form your Board of Advisors. Begin leveraging your network for shadowing and experiential learning opportunities.
- Sports & Athletic Recruitment: Get an honest read on your athletic trajectory, start identifying programs and coaches that fit your goals, learn the NCAA recruiting rules, and begin building your presence with college coaches through camps and strategic outreach.
- Family Check-Ins & Support: Join us at key check-ins throughout the year to share what you're seeing at home, what's working, and where your child has room to grow beyond the classroom. Our goal is to make sure you feel informed, aligned, and less stressed about the road ahead. Students should also practice being a contributing member of the family through regular chores, responsibility, and helping at home.
